Four months tomorrow I turn 30. When my mother asked what I wanted to do for my 30th she was expecting an answer along the lines of a house party, a spa day, a meal, a weekend away. The answer she actually got was the Blenheim Triathlon.
I had vaguely thought about triathlons before but it seemed like an awful lot of work, but I wanted to do something big and this one is actually on my 30th birthday and the official charity is Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research so it seemed like it was meant to be.
The general consensus from my family is that I've gone totally bat-shit crazy, and whilst running around Swan Pool at 8am on a freezing cold, foggy December Sunday morning, looking at the water that at some point I'm going to have to swim in, I tended to agree with them. I'm not sure I quite thought it through, but I just have to keep reminding myself, not only what a great achievement it will be, but also what a great cause it is raising money for.
I'm not so worried about the individual elements, I can swim 400m and cycle 10k and run 2.5k, it's just putting them all together that's the issue. Transition scares the living daylights out of me, not least because I'm going to have to figure out what on earth to do with my hair that is going to work with a swimming cap, a cycling helmet and running. I also have to come to terms with having to wear cycling shorts in public.
Of course, it's going to be even more of a challenge since I decided to go rally driving on the motorway. The doctor has told me it'll be 6 weeks before I can get back to training, and even though I plan to be up and about well before that, it still doesn't give me a huge amount of time to get race fit, especially given I've already spent weeks lying in bed doing nothing.
But I will do it. For Stan. For everybody who has supported me and are coming to watch/laugh at me. For everybody whose lives have been touched by this vicious, indiscriminate disease. Together we can beat blood cancer.
If you are feeling incredibly generous you can sponsor me on my JustGiving page here. Thank you. http://www.justgiving.com/LauraHickey
