Bring Der Hammer Home

Back in May I stated the case for returning Thomas Hitzlsperger to his rightful English home in 'My Source Tells Me...' at the time for around £500k, and now it's even better because he's on a free. What's more he wants to come home to Villa Park (told you it was down to a communication error he ended up at West Ham!), so what is the problem?

A source close to Hitzlsperger said "Thomas wants to go back to Villa. He enjoyed some great times there." And isn't that what we want? Players who actually want to be here, who want to play for us, who are proud to wear our shirt? How many times have we heard fans say "Well if he doesn't want to be here, he can go"? This has been said of Downing and Young many a time, so surely desire to play for us counts for something with the fans; counts for a lot with many fans.

Ok, so he's no Iniesta but he's a decent player; he's an international, he's got what it takes to be a regular in the Prem, he scores a reasonable number of goals for a midfielder, the fact he's known for taking long range shots mean defenders will close him down freeing up Dazzler and he's adorable.

He was certainly a fan favourite during the five years he spent with us previously, so what's changed? Other than him maturing and improving as a player since he joined us at 18? I really don't understand some of the absolute negativity about it, but think again it comes down to the delusionally high expectations and over-inflated ideas of where we're at that some fans have.

Now is the time for us to take stock and rebuild after what has been a quite frankly awful 12 months. Of course we'd all like to see big name, big bucks signings but a number of fans could do with a massive reality check. We're not going to win the league, we're probably not going to get into Europe, McLeish stated he was looking for an improvement on last season, which is a fair and realistic expectation for this season. Who knows what the future holds, but this season is about McLeish finding his team and his system and hopefully finishing in the top half, and signing players on a free who want to be here, who will wear the shirt with pride is no bad thing in my book.
