England vs Georgia - RWC

No-one can complain about the very convincing 41-10 scoreline against a very physical Georgia side, and in any game scoring 6 tries is not bad going at all. It was certainly a much better performance than against Argentina; we moved the ball faster and there seemed to be far more intent going forward as a team, but the number of penalties we are conceding is still something of a concern.

For the second game in a row we had a player sin-binned for repeated infringements, this time it was Hartley for persistent handling in the rucks, despite Jonathan Kaplan repeated calling for hands off, and Stevens seemed to have a major problem finding his bind in the scrum (again!) apparently due to the skin tight shirts. These are the sort of silly errors that England really need to sort out if we are going to win some of the tougher games coming up against teams that are going to convert far more penalties to points than Argentina and Georgia have done.

Georgia did what they do best in the first half and played the tight game, giving England very little room to manoeuvre and winning most of the breakdowns, where England still look mostly scrappy. Thanks to Hape's tries the scoreline looked quite comfortable just before Basilaia crashed over to bring Georgia to within one try going in for the break.

England started the second half brightly despite being down to 14 men as Hartley completed his spell in the sin-bin and Armitage was unlucky to be forced into touch for his first attempt at a try, but there was no denying him a second time. In patches England looked good, and a perfect lineout ball from Tom Croft led to Tuilagi's try and Ashton's trademark swallow dive is always a sight to behold.

Simon Shaw played exceptionally well as per usual and it was wonderful to see him playing at another World Cup. Thompson and Croft also made a real difference when they came on. But as Lewis Moody admitted after the game, they made it hard for themselves and gave away too many penalties. With better discipline and execution this team really could be capable of going the whole way in this tournament, but whether they have the time to sort it out now remains to be seen.
