VMF Scores Again

VMF gets better and better every time I go and is fast cementing it's place as one of my favourite restaurants in Birmingham.

From the delightfully powerful cauliflower and leek amuse-bouche to the decadent chocolate cake with pistachio sabayon, every plate was presented immaculately and packed full of flavour.

Risotto can be difficult and isn't known as the dish of death for nothing, but the yellow footed chanterelle risotto served as an entrée with beautifully delicate slow cooked cod loin had that perfect creamy yet still textural quality that usually only comes with years of experience, great talent or a lot of luck. The rilette of duck leg confit looked spectacular on it's slate disc and tasted just as good, while the white onion and Lightwood Um cheese soup maintained it's lightness despite being packed full of flavour.
My son was slightly put out not to find pigeon on the menu so instead opted for the lamb reforme and wasn't disappointed. The dauphinoise potatoes, beetroot and tongue were the perfect accompaniments. The beef fillet medallion was equally good and quite literally melted in your mouth.

It's a mark of a good restaurant that I will go there and choose the vegetarian main course, which I have done at VMF several times, and did again last night. The Wellington of feta, butternut squash and caramelised onion was exquisite and was complimented beautifully by the addition of braised red cabbage with feta crumbled over the top. The balance of flavours and textures was divine.
I could easily have chosen any of the desserts on offer but was swayed by the sweet, creamy pistachio sabayon which, along with the refreshing milk and honey ice cream, was the perfect complement to the rich chocolate cake and the perfect way to end the meal.

On offer at only £20 per head last night it's difficult to understand why the Director's Suite wasn't packed to the rafters. If you can find better food and service at a lower price than this anywhere in Birmingham, or indeed the country, please let me know.

We are so incredibly lucky to have this amazing restaurant on our doorsteps that offers so much to the local community in terms of apprenticeships, support to local producers and not least, an incredible dining experience at a ridiculously reasonable cost, but we need to support it.

Seeing so many empty tables at VMF when people are spending the same money on overhyped chicken makes me sad.
