El Guapo to Villa...?
At the time of writing this the fans and the media are no closer to really knowing who will succeed Gerard as Villa boss thanks to the "totally professional manner" in which they have conducted themselves and the speculation of smokescreens being thrown up by Randy.
I admit to getting slightly over excited yesterday amid unfounded speculation that Randy's jet had flown to Madrid, and surely that could only mean one thing - he obviously reads my blog and was going to fetch the Kinky Florist. Or not.
The talk of the last day or so has been mostly focused on the prospect of Roberto "El Guapo" Martinez after Whelan announced he had given Aston Villa permission to speak with the swarthy Spaniard (yes, I am determined that we will get one of those). And while I can't take all the credit for this one, unlike Quique, I did predict that our new manager would have a Z in his name.
And what is more he plays nice football; that attractive, passing, attacking football which is so nice to watch yet so sadly absent in many Premier League games. I don't want to shell out my hard-earned money to watch boring defensive long-ball football week in week out, I want to be excited by the game and reminded why I love it so much. Ok, in that moment when the final whistle goes and we've won, I don't much care how we did it, but afterwards, if we've been poor, or worse, boring, I feel somewhat cheated.
Maybe I'm too much of an idealist, but football should be about more than just the results. The way you earn them surely counts for something. I imagine there are Stoke fans, widely ridiculed for their "hoof-hoof-throw-goal" method of football who will say they love it, it wins games, gets them to cup finals, but at times think it might be nice to see a bit more passing and creativity from midfield. Or Manchester City fans, who think yeah, we won the FA Cup, finished 4th in the league, but wouldn't it be nice if we could have done it without spending such ridiculous amounts of money to buy a team.
We have a great youth system at Aston Villa, and with the likes of Albrighton, Bannan, Clark and Delfouneso ready to step up to the plate, now is the perfect time to appoint a young, up and coming manager who could build a great team with the players we already have. He has the opportunity to create his legacy at Aston Villa and to really fulfil his potential as a great manager, and most importantly, he wears a suit well.
I'm very positive to appointing Martinez as manager for Villa, looks like most of the people in the Norwegian supporter club also can settle for him even if he's not their first choice.
