Gabby for England
With Gabriel Agbonlahor in arguably the form of his life right now, it should have been a no-brainer for Capello to include him in the squad for Saturday's friendly against Spain. I think most Villa fan's would agree that they are delighted for him and that he fully deserves it, but I'm not sure, from a selfish point of view, I'm entirely happy.
Don't get me wrong, I'd be pissed if he didn't get a call up, because I fully subscribe to the principle that players should be picked for the England squad based on current form, not just because their name is an immovable fixture on the squad list.
It's just that I worry. I worry about losing him. He'll be there with the likes of Barry and Downing and Young all telling him how much better life is away from Villa Park. The money, the parties, the girls, because lets face it, all three seem to be doing far more partying than they ever did whilst playing for Aston Villa.
Gabby is one of ours, and a large part of me expects him to see out his career in a Villa shirt, but it's at times like this I do get concerned that his head might get turned.
It's been a tumultuous few years at Villa Park, and there were well publicised problems between Gabby and Houllier, but I think perhaps McLeish might be the right sort of manager to get the best out of Gabby, and it certainly seems to be working well so far.
So far this season is the best I have ever seen Gabby play consistently. He's obviously worked very hard over the summer, evidenced by the pictures of him in just his training vest during pre-season, and it's definitely paying off with him seemingly having found the perfect balance between strength and speed.
If we took a vote now, Gabby would be miles ahead as Player of the Season so far, but when it comes to the end of the season, I won't be voting for him. We all know what happens to Fan's Player of the Year (Milner, Downing...) and I want Gabby playing in a Claret and Blue shirt until the day he decides to hang his boots up for good.
So Gabs, take your headphones with you and ignore all the promises of riches away from Villa Park. We all love you as much as you love the club, and it would break my heart if you weren't here.
