New England Road Trip: Kennebunkport, Maine

From Boston, after a short stop in Salem to visit the Witches' Museum, our next stop was Kennebunkport, Maine. Kennebunkport completely lived up to my expectations as a quintessential small coastal Maine town. The town itself was a hub of activity with stores selling local crafts, antiques and old-fashioned candy as well as a multitude of eateries serving more seafood than I've ever seen. The surrounding area offered wonderfully quiet beaches and views of the ocean as well as natural wonders such as Spouting Rock and Blowing Cave.

The hotel was a very quaint, old-fashioned inn style hotel with drapes at the windows and rocking chairs in the corridors and offered all sorts of activities such as painting lessons complete with complimentary wine, exercise classes on the lawn, sailing charters and cookery demonstrations. Reminded us very much of Kellerman's.

One of the best things about Kennebunkport was the abundance of fresh seafood, and enjoying a lobster roll and old fashioned lemonade on the beach was a wonderful way to eat lunch.

Dinner was a slightly more civilised affair at the wonderful One Dock, best seafood restaurant in Maine according to Gordon Ramsey, with their signature lobster linguine which included a whole lobster!

Or for a more casual dining experience The Clam Shack over the bridge in Kennebunk was well worth the hype.

In true Maine tradition there were lighthouses everywhere, even at the bottom of the hotel lawn.

This is the view of our hotel from Colony Beach where had our lobster roll lunch (or shrimp roll in Tom's case, which the woman in Port Lobster thought was very odd but did anyway and only charged us $2.60 for!)

On our second day they was even a wedding on the lawn, but what a beautiful setting!

Erm, yeah, I just liked this photo.
