New England Road Trip: Newport, RI

From Lenox we headed towards Newport via the designer outlet village at Lee, where the most beautiful Michael Kors handbag, half of Banana Republic and a ton more clothes for Isabella from Osh Kosh B'gosh were purchased. We didn't actually know where we we going, or rather we did, it's just that the sat nav was telling us there was no Wave Ave. in Newport, Rhode Island! Which is probably because there's not. It's in Middletown, about 50 yards from the border with Newport, but we managed to find it thanks to a very helpful lad from Cork in the Newport Information Office.

We arrived to find we had been allocated a lovely three room suite complete with tanning lamps in the bathroom, three massive TVs and almost a view of Easton Beach from the window. There were a multitude of eateries within walking distance but we settled on Flo's Clam Shack which was right next-door.
Flo's is a little like a Clam Shack version of McDonald's, except with much nicer food although it's probably not much better for you. Food is ordered from the hatch outside where you are presented with a plastic lobster pager to tell you when your food's ready, which is then collected from the hatch inside. We opted for fried clam strips and Combo #1 - a cup of chowder, clam cakes and a beer - which cost $5.50!
Directly opposite Flo's and just before Newport's first beach, was the green, which afforded spectacular views of the ocean and the coastline, including several of Newport's famous mansions, without having to get sand in your shoes.
The roof terrace, complete with hot tub and fire pit, gave just as spectacular a view to the other side of the hotel across the serene Newport Pond. The view was particularly beautiful just after sunrise, although the staff did think I was odd having the door opened at 6am!
I had been on the beach before 6am watching the seagulls fish for clams and fly up to drop them on the sand in an attempt to break them open, but we returned after breakfast and spent the morning watching the waves roll in on to a practically deserted beach. It was idyllic.
